Remember, this is just a basic primer. On the outside, the meter looks like a typical old-fashioned analog meter. Below are a few examples from my VTVM collection. Your VTVM may look slightly different on the outside, but internally they are almost all identical. The heart of every VTVM is the balanced bridge circuit. This circuit was patented in !

Questions: Western Electric tubes date codes

History of the AR Series RCA’s greatest communications receiver creation was the AR , a receiver that achieved its renown by providing top performance and high reliability in service as a surveillance and intercept receiver during WWII and later as a “workhorse” for the RCA and Radiomarine Corporation of America coastal stations, usually in triple diversity receivers that provided world-wide ship-to-shore message handling.

The AR had been introduced in and was still being built as late as The finalized AR was a 14 tube superheterodyne that covered. The electronic design was the work of Lester T. Fowler while George Blaker handled the mechanical design. The Lend-Lease Act of October , allowed the USA to supply materiel to our Allies in exchange for permission to build and operate bases in the allied countries or territories.

Ludwell Sibley created a very complete list of the date codes on tubes. This is compiled from numerous sources and might go away, so save a copy of the pdf on your hard disk for future reference. DATE CODES FOR RCA-MADE TUBES.

Return to the Main Index. Sometimes there just isn’t enough information on electric instruments and amps to allow them to be properely dated. And many people ask me to try and determine the year of their old amplifier, or to help them with the year of their older off-brand electric guitar. Since I primarily collect amps by Fender, and guitars by Gibson, Fender, Martin, National, Epiphone, Gretsch and Rickenbacker, I really can’t help them with these other less popular brands.

As you have probably noticed, there is plenty of information here to help date the brands that I am interested in. But where does that leave everyone else? Well I’m not one to leave you out in the informational cold, so here’s something that I use quite often in dating amplifiers and electric guitars. It’s called the “source-date code”, and it can help determine the approximate age of an electric instrument by the date its components were manufactured.

Source-Date Codes On American made vintage gear, the pots and speakers provide an excellent opportunity to date a piece of equipment by referencing their “source-date code”. The source-date code found on pots and speakers gives the manufacturer and date roughly when the components were made. It may have been some time before the part was installed at the factory, but it still provides a good approximation of when the gear was made.

The source-date code will signify the earliest possible date that the instrument or amp could have been made. This isn’t going to be exact, but it will give you a “ball-park” age. And remember, even the dates indicated by the pots aren’t that exact.

It was a time capsule that had been buried in with instructions that it should remain sealed for 1, years. He began his MIT tenure as a research assistant on Project Whirlwind , which was developing a massive high-speed digital computer whose design eventually became the backbone of the American air defense system. Whirlwind was huge, both figuratively and literally.

Some of the vacuum tube brands available in the “radio” years. Note that, as television, high fidelity and industrial use of tubes developed, branding also changed. Older packaging generally referred to the contents as “radio” tubes whereas newer versions adopted the term “electron or electronic” tube.

Was it a bomb? Soon I discovered that it had been sent by my friend Roberto Castillo, the crazy telescope builder. I hadn’t ordered one Carefully I opened this nice shipping box. The cabinet was in such a good shape indeed that I could well leave it untouched. I just cleaned away the most obvious dirt, but left some in place: The only “outside” thing I had to do was making two knobs.

Only the concentric knobs at the center were there, while the two side knobs were missing.

The Beans had been a local favorite in Phoenix selling out shows with a tongue in cheek concept rock show called “The Mother of Ascension” featuring costumes and props before moving to San Francisco. After moving, Bill Spooner worked at the Fillmore West sweeping floors in between Beans gigs at the Longshoreman’s Halls and other depressing venues. The band’s loud, heavy jamming style didn’t attract attention and the band would go back to Phoenix and sell out shows to make rent.

Waybill’s nickname among the band was “Fee” short for ” Fiji ” thanks to his insane head of hippie hair.

The source-date code on a pot is a 6 or 7 digit code impressed into the casing of the potentiometer. For speakers this code can be 5, 6, 7 or 8 digits long, and it’s ink-stamped or paint-stamped on the “bell housing” of the speaker. In either case, the code works the same. The first 3 digits on a pot, or the first 2, 3 or 4 digits on a speaker are the source or manufacturer code.

The remaining 3 or 4 digits are the date code. In 3 digit dates code, the 1st digit is the last digit of the year. On 4 digits date codes, the 1st and 2nd digits are the last two digits of the year. In either case, the remaining 2 digits are the week of manufacture 01 to With this in mind, remember if the last two digits of the source-date code are greater than 52, you’re not looking at the source-date code! Also it’s worth mentioning: On 3 digit date codes, you have to “guess” the decade of the pot or speaker.

Usually this isn’t too difficult. Examples of Source-Date Codes. With all this information in mind, can you identify the following manufacturer and date of these source-date codes?

RCA Date Codes…

They are quite rare and very hard to find in such pristine condition. It still has the original patina, dark brown and copper just like the factory produced them. So many of these radios have had the patina polished away, missing the reins or the saddle.

Tomorrow morning, I am venturing down the road to Wilcox Arizona to retrieve a gift. Literally, a gift, as in free. It contains all of the tubes including 4 A’s which are simply wonderful. From what I can tell, this does not have the accordion style doors I had hoped for, but still a very cool transmitter. Not sure whether it was Gates or RCA that came up with the idea first, but it was basically a cost-cutting measure.

Aug 01,  · The getter is the little ring or square part right at the top under the silvery bit of the glass (or on the side in a ‘clear top’): Most manufacturers changed design quite radically over the years, so identifying specific attributes e.g. ‘square gettes’, ‘ladder plates’ etc can be a big help when identifying or dating.

Not open for further replies. I was wondering if anyone knows a site, or has information that might be interesting in this regard. It seems like the pre-WWII tubes don’t have dates and feature the engraved base. Then around the ‘s they started dating the tubes with the week and year. The code , for instance, would describe the year and the 39th week. Some of the ‘s codes omit the first 5 and are simply three digit codes. Below — I borrowed a photo of a B with the date code, meaning 13th week of But does anyone know why some were simply 3 digits and others 4 digits over what seems to me an overlapping time period?

You’d think this would be absolutley codified and uniform.
